A delegation of leaders in Makueni were treated to a surprise on Wednesday, September 16, when a phone call from Deputy President (DP) William Ruto was amplified on the public address system.
Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama had called the DP to assure him that the delegation was looking to secure the Ukambani block votes.
"Mwi aseo? (are you well)," the DP started off in an accent that could pass for a Kamba native.
The crowd was visibly excited as they responded in unison 'Twi aseo'.
The leaders then listened attentively as the DP went on to make his address on the agenda he had for the nation going forward.
"I very sincerely appreciate the work you are doing over there, I talked to Muthama and asked that we expedite the process of bringing you over here for some tea," he stated.
His invitation was welcomed with ululation, as the crowd chanted 'Ruto, hustler!'.
The DP also informed the delegates that during their planned face to face meeting, the various candidates and the respective seats they would wish to vie for would be discussed.
The 'phone rally' was a first for the people of Makueni and the DP as well.
With rallies now seemingly back in full force, the DP seems keen on reaching out to as many people as possible, in a bid to drum up support for his presidential bid in the 2022 general elections.
On Tuesday, September 15, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr informed he Senate that 'reggae is back' and urged that they be alllowed to hold virtual House sessions as most of them would be out on the road.
The pandemic has necessitated the adoption of technology across the board, and DP Ruto has been quick to use it to his advantage.
On the same day, he hosted a prayer meeting attended by Faithful from Naivasha and political leaders led by Rev. Adam Wachira of Victors Chapel-Kayole and MP Jayne Kihara (Naivasha), at his Karen home.
Other leaders present were Ben Washiali (Mumias East) and Liza Chelule (Woman Rep, Nakuru). This effectively meant that DP Ruto was able to share his message in two different rallies at the same time.
The DP is reportedly planning a tour of ODM leader Raila Odinga's stronghold of Kisumu and Migori counties.
Preparations for the eagerly anticipated rally are underway, with a delegation of select people from Siaya, Kibra and Kisumu, pictured at the DP's home.
The group was led by Eliud Owalo who announced his decision to join the Ruto 2022 presidential camp. The leader, formerly allied to Musalia Mudavadi's ANC party, ditched the faction in August 2020.
"We will take Ruto everywhere in Nyanza and I can assure you he will get votes when elections are held," Owalo asserted.
