Candidates are set to sit special exams after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), outlined plans to assess all students when schools reopen.
KNEC came up with Development assessment tools which will be sent to schools to weigh the entry behaviour of students before studies resume.
All primary students, both in public and private, will be tested first, with a proposal for secondary students still underway.
All schools will be supported through the Ksh 1.5 billion aid issued by Global Partnership for Education (GPE) through the World Bank.
The exams will be conducted by teachers, who will mark and upload results on the KNEC website.
According to KNEC, the plan to test students will enable teachers to understand the position of students who were forced to stay at home for over six months.
Grades 1 to 3 will be tested in foundational literacy and numeracy, while Grade 4, 5 and 6 will be assessed in mathematics, languages and science. Candidates will be tested in all subjects.
“Teachers will be able to evaluate the various understanding levels of children in their class and prescribe the best ways of assisting them to recover lost time,” KNEC Acting Chief Executive Officer Mercy Karogo stated on Friday, September 18.
This development came a few hours after Education CS George Magoha directed teachers to prepare to report back to their institutions as the final report on school reopening plans is set to be tabled.
"Teachers can start to prepare to report back to their schools to make them habitable ahead of the students' arrival. At that time, we will have phased re-opening with priority given to exam classes.
“In fact, technical colleges are likely to re-open soon," Magoha stated, but insisted on parents and stakeholders waiting for the announcement of schools reopening dates.
