President Uhuru Kenyatta's nephew and Personal Assistant (PA) Jomo Gecaga is embroiled in a rent row with former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.

Gecaga is seeking to block his eviction from a high-end apartment in Riverside, Nairobi, through JSTA Ltd, linked to Jomo’s father Udi Gecaga.

The property costs Ksh.540,000 monthly, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the rent was slashed by more than half to Ksh.250,000.

The conflict arose from rent relief period which expired on Wednesday, September 30, but which Gecaga seeks to have extended to December.

Gecaga was also accused of declining to sign a new lease agreement after previous pact lapsed in March 2016 amounting to an additional lease fee of Ksh.950,000.

In his defence, Uhuru's PA claimed that the family business had been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic that has severely ravaged the economy.

Court documents reveal that Kidero asked Gecaga to clear his outstanding arrears of Ksh.950,000 and vacate the premises.

"Geminvest Limited will not accept payment of Sh250,000 only as monthly rent.

"The company requests that you clear current outstanding bill of Ksh.950,000 for period ending September 30 and then vacate the unit," read the documents in part.

The case is set to be heard in court on Tuesday, October 6, after Senior Principal Magistrate Agnes Makau certified as it urgent.

Geminvest stated that they had introduced a number of measures to cushion the Gecaga's from the economic effects of Covid-19 such as the use of Kenya shilling to pay rent instead of dollars.

The rent was initially reduced to Ksh.400,000 in April and later to Ksh.250,000 for a period of three months from June to September.

Gecaga was also allowed to use the over Ksh.1 Million deposit as rent in February and March.

Should Gecaga fail to clear Ksh.950,000 lease arrears, Geminvest is seeking to have auctioneers seize his assets and attempt to evict him from the apartment.

Gecaga is related to Uhuru by virtue of Udi’s late father, Bethuel Gecaga, marrying President Kenyatta’s elder sister, Jeni Wambui.
