Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary-General Akelo Misori on Thursday, October 15 appealed to Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha after the phased reopening of schools.
Misori asked Magoha to fully reopen schools and send all the students back to class after Grade 4, Class 8 and Form 4 students reported back to school on Monday, October 12.
"We are going to lose an entire generation, we are asking the CS to be bold enough and to open all schools to learn normally," he noted.
He issued reasons why children are safer in school compared to when they are at home as the country has moved to gradually reopen the economy.
"Parents are going to the bars, they are attending political rallies, churches are open, they have even increased the number of attendees to churches and even funerals.
"Students presence at home is more hurting than when they are in school, yes it would be a real challenge to continue having normal programs when schools fully reopen," he noted.
The Sec-Gen added that schools need to adhere to the Covid-19 protocols issued by the Ministry of Health to mitigate the spread of the virus in learning institutions.
Misori urged the government to expand health facilities across the country and allow learning under strict health protocols with the pandemic showing no signs of ending anytime soon.
A 10-member special task force formed by CS Magoha on Sunday, October 11 advised that all students report to school on Monday, October 26.
Part of the recommendations stated that students in pre-primary one and two, grades one to three, class five to seven, as well as those in form 1 to 3, are to report back to school from October 26 to November 2.
Magoha is however yet to formally announce a date for the full resumption of learning despite the recommendation from the task force.
This comes at a time when the country is recording a spike in Covid-19 cases with 602 cases reported on Thursday, October 15.
