A grandmother who was given land by former president Daniel Moi was evicted from the property in ongoing demolitions in Nakuru County.

Monicah Marianjugu (71) was among the residents who were rendered homeless when her house was demolished in the exercise by Kenya Railways earlier in the week.

The woman alleged that she had been allocated the land by the former president in 1992 in exchange for another piece of land which Moi wanted for the expansion of Baringo High School.

The lease of the land was in her late husband Peter Marianjugu Macharia's, name which showed they were allocated 0.4143 hectares at Railways area for 99 years.

Marianjugu explained that it was in 1990 that Moi expressed interest in acquiring the land that bordered the school.

"He sent some of his aides to our home, who pleaded with us to hand over the land to the school, Moi promised to give us another piece of land in Nakuru," she recalled.

The land was taken by the government via compulsory acquisition and in 1995, a court ruling stated that the land in Railways belonged to the family.

"For close to 30 years, I have known this place as my home following a successful exchange authorised by the late President Moi. I do not have anywhere to go apart from my former home in Baringo," she added.

The demolitions which stated on October 11, saw over 300 business premises demolished along Geoffrey Kamau Way in Nakuru.

The exercise targeted restaurants, hotels, night clubs and car bazaars among other businesses.

The project is being undertaken under the Presidential Delivery Unit, with engineers from the Kenya Defence Forces providing technical support.

The government has maintained that it will not compensate anyone who has encroached on public land with the exercise expected to proceed to Gilgil and Naivasha areas.
