Five family members are currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to complications arising from Covid-19 infection, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang disclosed.
Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations on Tuesday, October 20, the county boss urged residents to uphold containment measures as he gave the family's case as a precautionary tale.
"Corona is real. The family members are all admitted to the ICU, and it started with the father who went drinking in a pub and when it was time to close, he opted to hide with other revellers in an enclosed space," he narrated.
Further investigations by the county's contact tracking unit revealed that the father got infected in the setting and later went on to infect his family with the virus which currently has no cure.
"The hospital bill will not be less than Ksh5 Million for all of them and all this could have been avoided," he stated.
Nandi County had reported 151 cases as of October 21 with the governor revealing that it had set up ICU facilities in the county.
"We have completed the establishment of our ICU facilities with 7 ICU beds at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital and 3 ICU beds in Nandi Hills County Hospital. These 10 ICU beds are ready for use. We have also procured an additional 5 ICU beds,” he stated in June 2020.
The country has witnessed a surge in the cases with the total caseload at 46,144 as of October 21.
The Ministry of Health revealed that there were 27 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 27 on ventilatory support, and 41 on supplementary oxygen.
A total of 1,189 are admitted to various health facilities and 2,661 on home-based isolation and care.
Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi observed that there was fatigue among Kenyans in adhering to certain measures.
"In Bomet County reports are that people are not wearing masks and washing hands because they think Covid-19 is no longer here.
"As a government, we are looking at whether we should escalate containment measures. All options are on the table," she stated.
Nandi County headquarters was recently shut down for 14 days after eight staff members tested positive for Covid-19.
Contacts of the affected officers were put on self-quarantine as fumigation of the offices began in ernest.
