Six teachers and two non-teaching staff also contracted the disease bringing the total tally of cases recorded at the school to 60.

Medics affirmed that the infected were placed under quarantine. The health officers also initiated contact tracing.

These cases come four days after 11 cases were reported at Friends School Kamusinga and 6 at Kimili Boys High School in Bungoma County. Two teachers, from Mombasa and Kakamega, also succumbed to the virus.

Education CS George Magoha has insisted that schools will reopen despite Kenya recording an upsurge in Covid-19 daily cases.

The CS refuted claims by headteachers that students were ungovernable in schools as they only resorted to adhering to health protocols, washing hands, sanitising and social distancing while under strict supervision.

School heads lamented that Grade 4, Class 8 and Form 4 students had lowered their guards after reporting to schools on October 12.

Magoha added that he has the full support of parents and schools were ready to receive all the other students who were directed to stay at home. The CS will meet President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, November 4 to discuss on dates for the mass return of students

"Majority of parents are saying we can have all other children at school because others are there. If you look at children in schools, they are wearing masks. When you go out of schools, you may see many people not taking precautions," Magoha defended.
