A Nairobi businesswoman is reeling in shock after her lover destroyed property worth hundreds of thousands from her home in Kasarani Constituency, Nairobi County.

Jane Wanjiru narrated that her boyfriend, only known as Kariuki, broke inside her home, smashed her vehicle windows before proceeding to vandalize her bungalow.

"I was not at home, it was around 6:30 pm when he called me and said that that he had broken into my house," Wanjiku described the weekend incident.

Witnesses in the area indicated that Kariuki, a police officer attached to Hurlingham police station, was armed with a gun and a panga and had threatened to use the weapons on anyone who tried to get in his way.

Wanjiku narrated that their fallout began a month ago when Kariuki asked her to pay for a car loan that he had taken but she declined.

"He has a grudge because he took a car on a loan and asked me to help him pay for it. However, when I told him that I was not in a position to, he threatened that he was going to kill me," she stated.

Wanjiku said that her life is at risk and appealed to Women Rights Defenders to come to her aide as well as help her get compensation for the lost property.

"I have reported the case but I am yet to see any action being taken. I have not been spending my nights in my house but have been seeking refuge in my neighbours houses," she stated.

Cases of domestic violence have been on the rise especially in the wake of the covid-19 restrictions.

Women rights campaigners posit  that women and girls are more vulnerable to physical abuse and exploitation.

The came a day after a female student from the University of Eldoret was arrested for allegedly stabbing a 33-year-old Nairobi lawyer.

The student reportedly stabbed her lover three times on the collarbone, back and abdomen.
