Citizen TV's Maria Among Top Google Searches [LIST]

Local Citizen TV drama, Maria was among the top internet searches in Kenya - further proving its fanatical following in the local audience. 

A Google report released on Wednesday, November 4, showed that the local drama took the fourth slot in the trending searches for the month of October.

The popular show airs right after the 7 pm news and has been constantly sweeping the airwaves, endearing to many Kenyans who have been glued to their screens since its onset.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) Trends Report Q2 2019-2020 released in December 2019, showed that Citizen TV to be the most-watched TV station (48%). The show was attributed to the huge spike in the ratings of the station.

According to the report, betting was the number one most searched word on Google. This is in spite of the government's efforts to mitigate the vice among the youth.

"Betting activities in the country have adversely affected the social fabric of our society, particularly the youth. In this regard, we wish to reiterate the commitment of the government on taxation of this industry so as to contain such vices," the National Treasury and Planning Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani clarified on the matter while issuing a statement on the Finance Act 2020.

The second most intriguing search term was football particularly revolving around the English Premier League (EPL). The report revealed that most Kenyans showed interest in specific English clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea.

World Teacher's Day, which was marked on October 5, emerged as the third most searched term. The day is meant to commemorate the role of teachers while also addressing their issues within the profession.  

The school reopening search query was the fourth trending query. The issue was a cause for concern among many parents who were in a state of disarray regarding the resumption of learning after initial suspension when Covid-19 hit Kenya in March.

Musician Rhino Kaboom and Comedian Othoul Othoul took the sixth and seventh slot respectively. Rhino Kaboom came to his demise on October 4, through a fatal accident while Comedian Othoul Othoul also succumbed to a brain tumor on October 11, at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The long-anticipated London Marathon, which took place on October 4, clinched the eight spot. The query intrigued many Kenyans as they rallied ample support for Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge who had been pitted against arch-rival Kennenisa Bekele. The latter though, suffered an injury, days prior depriving many people of the chance of seeing the two face off.

Jerusalema, the dance craze that swept the country during the month of October, scooped the ninth position. Netizens and various companies took the challenge to show off their coordination and dance moves in a bid to keep up with the latest trend.

The gospel sensation took the country by storm as key figures such as President Uhuru, Raila, hopped on the dance challenge.

Covid-19 cases rounded up the top ten list as Kenyans were interested in the surge of cases and conversations surrounding the issues of the restriction by the government.
