The Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) under the leadership of Major General Mohamed Badi has now sought the help of the National Police Service in dealing with what it termed as deliberate littering of city estates.

On Wednesday, November 11 Badi's deputy, Kang'ethe Thuku convened a meeting with police bosses from all the Nairobi sub-counties to discuss the garbage menace.

The police were directed to be vigilant and come up with punitive punishment against those found littering within the county

"NMS DDG Kang'ethe Thuku hosts a consultative meeting with National Government Administration Officers, National Police Service on Garbage management in Nairobi.

"The officers drawn from all 17 Subcounties will oversee enforcement with punitive measures to be taken against litterers," read a statement from NMS.

This comes after Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko hit out at President Uhuru Kenyatta and Badi over streets that were littered with garbage.

Sonko, who has fallen out with Badi, shared a photo of a section of Pipeline Estate in Embakasi South Constituency, showing heaps of rotting garbage piled outside residential houses.

NMS on Tuesday, November 10 responded to Sonko's comments, citing sabotage in the increased incidences of littered streets.

"As saboteurs and detractors heap garbage on timelines, NMS and the people of Nairobi desirous and fully cognizant of their role in a clean environment are at work each day 3000 tonnes against meagre kilos collected in the past. We are closer to a clean city, a green city," read a statement from NMS.

Badi during a visit to Westlands, Nairobi over the conservation of the iconic fig tree revealed that plans have been drafted to improve estates environments within the county.

"We have plans in place to create new neighbourhood parks within our residential estates for the community to enjoy recreational spaces close to their homes.

"River regeneration activities will also be an ongoing initiative as to reclaim riparian reserves," noted Badi.

Nairobi county and NMS have been at loggerheads over the provision of services with the garbage contracts still under Sonko's administration.
