There was drama at the Nyamira Court on Wednesday, November 11, after a suspect appeared at the dock allegedly drunk.
The suspect was arrested by police officers in Nyamira town on Tuesday, November 10, before being arraigned in court.
Court orderlies struggled to contain the suspect as he addressed the Chief Magistrate in Ekegusii, and mumbling barely legible statements.
A police officer attempted to block a Standard Group journalist from covering the events as the Chief Magistrate took time to consult with the orderlies.
The police officer instructed the journalist to stop recording the events, and instead wait until the court session was over.
The journalist, however, rebuffed the attempts by the officer to block the coverage with the Magistrate adjourning the case soon after.
The suspect appeared in court wearing a swollen face and struggled to see or even follow instructions. It is alleged the suspect was roughed up by police officers after he tried to resist arrest.
The court ordered the suspect to be taken for psychiatric assessment before being presented in court.
The incident comes just weeks after three Chinese nationals presented themselves at the Mombasa Law Courts fully dressed in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
The magistrate was forced to postpone the hearing after she mistook the suspects for Ministry of Health officials who had come to collect a Covid-19 patient.
