One of the ten survivors who were on board a boat in Lake Victoria that capsized on Tuesday evening, November 17, has recounted events just before the fatal accident.

The survivor narrated that the passengers were on their way to Honge beach in Bondo sub-county from Uganda, when they encountered heavy winds.

"We had loaded our boat with bananas, potatoes and maize. When we were halfway through our journey, there were very strong winds and it also started raining," he explained.

As the winds grew stronger, the boat started swaying to the point of water getting in the boat, before it eventually capsized.

"I saw some of the people on board drowning as some of us clung on the boat until we were rescued by fishermen in the area," he added.

Siaya Police Commander Francis Kooli stated that the search for the other 10 passengers was still ongoing.

"According to the weather right now, we are having strong winds...sometimes people go against the measures provided," Kooli stated.

He added that some of the vessels being used to ferry goods and passengers lack weather forecasting equipment

The incident occurred just a day after a family of nine capsized at Lake Naivasha.

Boat operators were quick to whisk the nine to safety.

Lake Naivasha Boat Association Chairman, David Kilo pointed out that abandoned nets at the shore caused the midday incident.
