A huge fire has destroyed an unknown number of structures at the cereals and 'mitumba' sections at Gikomba market, Nairobi County.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the fire broke out on Friday, November 20, during the wee hours of the morning

Traders could be seen trying to battle the raging inferno in a bid to salvage some of their property but their efforts remained futile.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

The market has been prone to several such incidents which has led to the traders counting heavy losses over the years, some cases leading to loss of lives.

A recent case saw a fire breakout on June 25, which saw grave destruction of properties and structures. This incident led the Interior PS Karanja Kibicho to visit the market and pledge to compensate the traders who had lost goods.

Last year, the market saw three such incidents. In August 2019, property worth more than Ksh 100 million was reduced to ashes at the market.

In June 2018, at least 15 people died while more than 60 were injured in a night fire at the same market.
