Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was on Monday, November 30, involved in a confrontation with police at the Office Park, Nairobi, during a meeting with MCAs.

Reports indicate that several gunshots were fired in the air allegedly to disperse the MCAs who were meeting with the Nairobi Governor.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Jacob Elkana, the governor's communications director explained the events leading up to the reported arrest.

"The governor was at Office Park for a meeting with several MCAs. That's when a contingent of armed police suddenly appeared.

"All hell broke lose. The police fired several teargas cannisters and shot in the air. They roughed up the MCAs. However, the Governor was not arrested," he explained.

He maintained that the ongoing rumors that the Nairobi Governor is currently under police custody is fake news," the police stormed the area and beat up several MCAs with reckless abandon. Shots were fired, however, the stories going around that the governor was arrested are false," he added.

Several media houses had reported that the Governor was arrested and whisked away by the police.

"Arresting Mike Sonko for meeting MCAs in the week of his impending impeachment is nothing short of using the police for politics. Just as happened in Senate, this must be condemned whether you support the governor or not. Let’s not claw back on democracy using COVID as an excuse," Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja stated.

The embattled governor is currently facing an impeachment motion at the Nairobi County Assembly.

On Friday Novemeber 27, Sonko accused County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura of breaching sub judice rule and contempt of court.

Through his lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui, the Governor said none of the grounds presented by Minority Leader Michael Ogada on impeachment has been particularized terming them as naked allegations.

Members of the public have until Wednesday, December 2, to submit their views in support or against the planned impeachment of Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko.

This follows a notice filed by Minority Leader Michael Ogada with the support of 82 MCAs who intend to impeach the Governor over Ksh37.2 billion county budget.
