A junior police officer in Meru County assaulted his senior in public and in front of his colleagues and members of the public on Tuesday, December 1.

Stephen Lenairoshi turned on OCS Patrick Wambugu with kicks and blows after the senior confronted him for reporting to duty while drunk.

Wambugu had asked Lenairoshi to escort Meru Deputy County Commissioner Stephen Ogolla to a Covid-19 sensitisation event.

The OCS then summoned the junior police officer to his office to issue him with instructions on how to proceed with his duties.

According to an OB number filed at the station, OB 24/01/12/2020, Lenairoshi was said to have found the OCS occupied with other duties.

Wambugu was attending to members of the public, as usual, advising them and listening to their complaints.

The OCS questioned the junior police who appeared intoxicated. He wanted to find out why Lenairoshi reported to duty while drunk against work ethics and code of conduct.

Rather than responding, the junior cop descended on his boss kicking him in the face and punching him severally.

His colleagues who were at the scene, however, intervened and apprehended him. He was detained at the cells awaiting disciplinary action.

Cases of police turning against their colleagues, bosses, their families and themselves have been rampant. Some cases have ended up tragically with murders and suicides being recorded.

In April 2019, Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai promised to look into the mental and psychological health of police officers. The IG was responding to a case whereby athlete cum police officer Asbel Kiprop had threatened to commit suicide

"I am here to take care of all officers as they provide safety and security to all, I included. Let us share what we are going through to avoid what we have seen where sadly, officers have had to take away their lives. I am personally following up on Asbel Kiprop's case," the police boss stated.
