A nifty police operation on Saturday night, December 5, saw 56 revelers arrested inside a bar for allegedly flouting curfew rules in Trans Nzoia County.

Reports indicated that more than 150 people managed to escape from the police raid.

Speaking to the media, Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Frederick Ochieng confirmed the incident noting that the owner of the bar was also apprehended.

“The 56 persons arrested will be arraigned in court Monday for violating curfew rules, while the bar owner will be charged for operating the bar without a valid license past the curfew hours,’’ Ochieng said.

Furthermore, he issued a strict warning to bar owners affirming that tougher measures may be employed to ensure that they comply with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.

“Those persons operating bars and selling alcohol, we have taken note. Most likely your license will be permanently revoked,” he stated.

These sentiments were echoed by Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Sam Ojwang who added that the dusk to dawn curfew was still in full effect.

“As the co-chairman of the county emergency response team of coronavirus virus, I am putting emphasis on strict adherence to protocols which include individual responsibility especially this December holiday,’’ Ojwang said.

Police officers have been vigilant and have nabbed scores of Kenyans who have not adhered to the Covid-19 protocols.

The past month has seen scores arrested for either not wearing masks or trooping into bars beyond 10 pm.

Cabinet Secretary for Health Mutahi Kagwe, in a past briefing, urged police officers to enforce the set measures in a bid to curb the rise of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Currently, Kenya has recorded 87,984 positive cases with fatalities amounting to 1,518 since the onset of the virus in March.
