Kenyans of goodwill came to the aid of a family whose 2- month old baby had been detained at the newborn unit at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Nairobi County.

Reports indicated that the medical arrears had amounted to Ksh 1 million with the family only managing to raise ksh600,000.

However, well-wishers stepped in to raise the rest of the amount after the family's case aired on national broadcaster - KBC

The plight of the family was first highlighted by KBC on Saturday, December 5.

Baby Pendo Akinyi had been born prematurely at 7 months following the doctors’ advice to carry out a caesarian section in order to save the lives of both mother and child. Unfortunately, two days after the operation, the mother died.

Senior Nursing officer at the KNH private wing, Domtila Mwagodi noted that the condition of the mother had deteriorated over time which led to her demise.

The father, Dexter Luvari, decried the debt incurred at the hospital along had come, at the same time, the family was dealing with burial preparations of his deceased wife.

“I appeal to Kenyans to help us in raising the funds so that Baby Pendo can be released.

"The more she stays at the hospital, the more the bill increases thus making it harder for us to settle the arrears,” the distraught father appealed.

Fortunately, Luvari came out to thank the well-wishers who had enabled them to raise Ksh400,000 - in just 24 hours after the plight was highlighted.

Many Kenyans have been facing an economic crisis especially due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.

This has seen scores appeal for help in order to settle their medical bills.

A recent case saw Kenyans came to the rescue of a family whose teenage daughter was stuck in India for more than one and a half years.

The family was able to bring Fiona Wanjiru back to the country after well-wishers settled a medical bill amounting to KSh3.2 million.
