3 people were on Tuesday, December 8, killed in a tragic accident after an oncoming bus rammed their motorcycle on the Garissa-Nairobi highway.

According to an eyewitness, the bodaboda rider caused the accident when he tried to overtake a station wagon but unfortunately crashed into an oncoming bus.

“The rider who was speeding had just overtaken the small vehicle, he then tried to turn to his side but hit the car and was thrown into the bus lane hitting it head-on,” an eyewitness noted.

The morning accident attracted curious onlookers from the area which is about two kilometres from Garissa town.

Police officers had a tough time managing the fracas at the scene as a section of boda boda riders had threatened to burn down the bus.

The situation, however, took a turn for the better as the officers along with a few elders from Madogo, controlled the rowdy crowd.

Speaking to a local media house, a police officer noted that the recklessness of the boda boda rider caused the fatal accident.

The officer added that while the bus was at high speed, the accident could have been avoided had the rider given way to the station wagon.

The bodies were taken to Garissa Referral Hospital Mortuary.

Recent statistics show that road accident cases have increased in 2020 compared to a similar period in 2019.

According to a report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), there has been an increase of 5.8 percent in road fatalities as of October 31.

The authority attributed the majority of these accidents to motorists and passengers failing to adhere to the traffic rules.
