Details have surfaced indicating that Esther Nthenya Muli had requested for sick leave to get a doctor's appointment before reports of Machakos Senator Kabaka's sudden illness broke out.
Muli, who is the Deputy Principal and Kiswahili teacher at Mathemba Secondary School in Makueni County, requested the leave on Wednesday, December 2.
Her colleagues intimated that Nthenya left the school at around 5 pm after consulting the principal, Isaack Mutua.
"She left in the evening after work. She had permission not to report on Thursday, December 3, and was supposed to see a doctor," an insider disclosed while speaking to the Standard.
Reports further alleged that she called the school on Thursday, December 3, requesting to extend her sick leave as she had been referred to a hospital in Nairobi.
On Friday, December 4, news broke out that Senator Kabaka had been rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Nairobi Hospital where he also underwent surgery.
The teacher was then arrested with the state indicating she would face attempted murder charges against the Senator after she was found to have checked in with him at the service apartments in Kilimani, Nairobi.
Her principal, Isaack Mutua, declined to comment on the issue adding that it was way above his jurisdiction.
"This matter is being handled by my superiors, I will not comment on it," he distanced himself.
Before being transferred to Mathemba Secondary, Nthenya was a teacher at Makueni Boys. She runs a popular club in Wote, Makueni and is a widow. Her husband, a businessman, passed away years ago.
On Wednesday, December 9, the government released the test results of the Senator which debunked claims that he was poisoned. Vomit samples from the Senator analysed at the Government Chemist revealed that there were no toxins fed to the lawmaker as had been earlier speculated.
Esther Muli, a teacher at Mathemba High School in Kathonzweni, Makueni County was also freed from police custody after the release of the results.
On the next day, the Senator's family released a statement clarifying his health status and asked his supporters to pray for his quick recovery.
