Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday, December 12, highlighted a number of issues that needed to be addressed urgently.

Speaking during the Jamhuri Day Celebrations at Nyayo Stadium, Ruto stated that health care, education and Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) had been gravely affected since the outbreak of the pandemic in April.

He acknowledged that the 57th Jamhuri Day celebrations were taking place under unique, extraordinary and unprecedented circumstances that had affected the political, social and economic status.

Ruto added that with unity, the issues would be better addressed.

"This issue is unprecedented and it calls on all of us to have a unity of purpose, thought and plan. We are confident that as you lead the charge to confront the challenge like our forefathers confronted the might of colonialism, we too will overcome this challenge because we believe in your leadership."

The DP regretted that numerous families had lost their loved ones while some had faced health challenges throughout the year.

"Your excellency you have the prayers of millions of Kenyans as you lead this nation during these very difficult times," the DP stated.

In his speech, the president gave direction on the reopening of schools and plans to boost the SME sector through a proposed Credit Guarantee Scheme, but steered clear on the impending doctor's strike.

Kenyatta warned parents against failing to comply with the January school reopening directive.

He directed the Ministry of Interior to oversee the process.

“To guarantee that no child is left behind I hereby direct and order as follows; That the Ministry of Interior shall through all chiefs account for all children within their jurisdictions.

“I direct that the ministry of education shall receive reports from all primary and secondary schools regardless of the system of education they deliver on the details of any child or children who have not reported back to school as directed," the president stated.
