The office of former President Mwai Kibaki has weighed in on reports claiming that his Othaya, Nyeri Home has been neglected.
An insider privy to the details stated that the estate, built by the second President had been neglected.
The reports added that police officers guarding the home were complaining of a lack of supplies and a poor working environment.
The home's airstrip was reportedly in a dire state that has seen the grass rise above the perimeter fence.
His farm in Narumoru also in Nyeri was also reportedly abandoned with frequent power cuts due to unpaid electricity bills.
Sources intimated that it took the intervention of family members to have the bills cleared after the farm was denied access to utility bills.
"Those reports are unsubstantiated and the one claiming as such should get their facts right.
"That is pure nonsense," Kibaki's aide Ngari Gituku clarified while speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, December 15.
The former President's Ksh 400 million retirement home in Mweiga, Nyeri County, was reported to be under superb conditions as it is being maintained by the government.
Kibaki was said to have visited the home occasionally and his late wife, former First Lady Mama Lucy Kibaki, never settled in it despite visiting it once during construction.
Located along Nyeri-Nyahururu road, the mansion, which is also referred to as a mini-statehouse, spots a helipad to receive the former president and his guests.
Kibaki prefers to spend most of his time in the upmarket estate of Muthaiga in Nairobi.
In May 2020, Treasury data indicated that Mwai Kibaki was poised to earn around Ksh 34.43 million in every financial year. The amount comprised of retirement perks and monthly stipends.
He is also accorded personal aides, gardeners, cooks and security officers under the government's payroll.
