Matatu Owners Association, on Thursday, December 17, launched a fumigation exercise in all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) in Machakos County.
This is after a passenger died on a Machakos bound bus on Tuesday morning, December 15.
The 68-year-old man was discovered sitting motionless in the bus just moments after boarding the vehicle.
The cause of the death was not yet established though it was suspected to be Covid-19 related.
The fumigation exercise was aimed at ensuring safety of passengers boarding buses especially during the festive season.
The association working with Machakos County health department urged motorists and passengers to adhere to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.
These efforts are in a bid to curb the second wave, according to the CEC Health for Machakos Ancent Kituku.
"During this time, so many people travel and we want to reduce all chances of passengers and motorists contracting the virus," Kituku noted.
There have been recent crackdowns by police officers across the country nabbing PSVs that do not adhere to the Covid-19 regulations.
The directive came after Inspector General of police Hilary Mutyambai announced a Ksh20,000 fine for anyone found flouting Covid19 protocols. Motorists also found past the curfew hours would have their licenses revoked.
Despite these measures, a spot-check across various matatu termini showed that most PSVs still carry excess passengers especially now that many people are travelling upcountry for the festive season.
