Kirinyaga County Government on Tuesday, January 12, released Ksh110 million that will go towards paying school fees for 40,000 secondary and university students.
The county picked the beneficiaries through a vetting process overseen by the Ward Bursary Committees.
The bursary is expected to benefit 32,000 students from secondary schools and 8,000 students at the university level.
Speaking during the event, Kirinyiga County governor Anne Waiguru noted that the disbursement was part of the county's plan to uplift education in the county.
“My government remains committed to supporting the education of the children in the county and the improvement of academic performance in Kirinyaga and ultimately, the lives of the county youth," she stated.
The event was attended by Kirinyaga County Assembly Leader of Majority, Kamau Murango as well as ward representatives who applauded the plan.
The county also announced that the county was in the process of distributing 140,000 facemasks and water tanks to Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers.
“The county’s department of health is working closely with all the schools to offer guidance on Covid-19 and monitor the implementation of the set health guidelines.
"All our schools have been assigned a health worker and a health facility to which any suspected case of Covid-19 should be reported," she added.
Ward representatives noted that the bursaries would go a long way in reducing the parents’ burden of school fees.
