The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) will conduct its school-based assessment for Grade 1 to 3, classes 5 to 7 from Monday, January 18 to Friday, January 22.
This will be the first assessment since schools reopened on Monday, January 4, after the long closure of schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to KNEC CEO Mercy Karogo, the assessment will inform teachers on learning gaps and suggest interventions to be put in place to address the gaps as learners progress through the second and third terms of their academic year.
The purpose of the assessment, according to Karogo, is also to establish the extent in which students were affected during the pandemic period.
Grade 7 will be assessed in all subjects which include Maths, English, Kiswahili, Science and Social Studies.
Grade 5 and 6 will be assessed on Maths, English, Kiswahili and Science.
Grade 1-3 will be assessed on the basics that is English, Kiswahili and Maths. For all subjects, assessments will be drawn from the previous classes. In the case of Grade 7, the assessment will be based on learning activities from Grade 1 to Grade 6 and term one of Grade 7.
Karogo urged all teachers and school heads to give much attention to the exercise.
"Please note that the reliability and integrity of the outcome of these assessments rests upon the headteachers and teachers.
"You are therefore called upon to ensure that learners are provided with a natural environment in order to guard against extraneous variables that could affect their performance," part of the statement from KNEC read.
Results for assessment conducted for Grade 8 have been published. This will serve as a guide to the teachers on key areas to focus on ahead of the KCPE examinations in March 2021.
