The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi was on Tuesday, January 19, caught up in a public sat with Laikipia County First Lady Maria Mbeneka.
Mbeneka, who is also a prominent lawyer, criticised the chaos that erupted during an LSK meeting where lawyers opposed to Havi allegedly disrupted the meeting and got involved in a heckling contest with his allies.
"How NOT to conduct meetings 101 as has happened today. The law society of Kenya is a complete and utter shame," Mbeneka stated.
The LSK President did not take the statement lightly and responded to Mbeneka's sentiments.
"First Lady, concentrate on your official role in Laikipia County. You cannot send your known goons to disrupt a peaceful meeting of the Law Society of Kenya and blame it on the President," Havi stated.
The lawyers had convened in the meeting to discuss the appointment of auditors to probe LSK’s books of accounts, deliberate on an impeachment motion against Havi and the current wrangles within the body.
The outcome of the meeting saw eight council members suspended on the basis of corruption and gross misconduct.
The first lady and the LSK president have been at loggerheads in the past differing on views and ideas based on how the LSK body should be run.
During the LSK Presidential elections in 2020, Mbeneka resigned from the Co-operative Tribunal in the Ministry of Agriculture in order to vie for the seat. She however lost to Havi who secured a decisive win.
Mbeneka has previously called out Havi on twitter after he allegedly cast aspersions on the conduct of the Court of Appeal judges who were handling his case. She claimed that Havi blocked her on Twitter in 2014 after she sought to know why the lawyer would conduct himself in such a manner.
Havi, in response to the allegations, noted that he joined Twitter in 2015 and could not have possibly blocked her.
