Chaos erupted at the Nyandarua County Assembly on Monday, January 11, during a special sitting that saw MCAs exchange blows over the recent ouster of Speaker Wahome Ndegwa.
This was the first sitting convened by Deputy Speaker Zachary Njeru after Speaker Ndegwa was impeached on Friday, January 8.
The purpose of the meeting was to communicate a gazette notice on the impeachment against Ndegwa.
Eight MCAs who opposed the impeachment stormed the House and began throwing seats and other crude weapons at the Deputy Speaker.
This led to a chaotic scene at the assembly as the pro-Njeru MCAs traded blows with those who supported the impeachment.
A section of the leaders managed to pull Njeru to safety. The MCAs managed to dissolve the County Public Service Board before the House was adjourned for two weeks.
Ndegwa had recently moved to court to challenge his ouster. The impeached speaker, who had been accused of gross misconduct, nepotism and abuse of office, termed the ouster as illegal citing that the assembly was in recess.
His lawyers also stated that the MCAs had not followed the due procedure for impeaching the speaker.
This chaos came on the same day that Nyandarua County mourned the death of Rurii Ward MCA Mburu Githinji.
Githinji died on Monday morning, January 11, at the Nairobi hospital after battling three years of illness.
County Assemblies have seen an increase in violent sessions in the recent past. In August 2020, two rival factions also clashed over the speaker Geoffrey Anyango's ouster.
Anyango had stormed the assembly with his supporters to demand his seat citing that the impeachment process was unlawful.
