The Interfaith Council of Kenya has issued a directive on school-going children attending churches and mosques as part of its phased reopening of places of Public Worship.
In a statement, the chairman of the Interfaith Council, Archbishop Anthony Muheria, said that Sunday schools, Madrassas, and other religious gatherings would resume from Monday, January 25.
The resumption of Sunday schools and madrassas is however subject to places of worship enforcing Covid-19 regulations.
He noted that special care would be given to the children to ensure that the Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines such as the proper wearing of masks, observing social distance of 1.5 meters for the seating arrangement and avoidance of shaking of hands are enforced.
Furthermore, Muheria lauded the efforts of the majority of churches and mosques that have adhered strictly to the protocols.
He however castigated the few who flout the guidelines and in the process endanger congregants.
The council noted that the directive comes on the back of a flattening Covid-19 curve from reports by the MOH.
Over the past few days, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe noted that the country's positivity rate has been below 5 percent, a major improvement from 19 percent registered during the month of November 2020.
Kagwe attributed the flattening of the Covid-19 curve to the measures put in place by the ministry in its efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
He added that the MoH would not ease the restrictions.
"We are not going to ease any measures right now. We intend to beef up surveillance. The curfew has played a big role in the numbers going down," he stated.
