Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) had a hard time pleading with a suspected criminal who attempted to commit suicide after he was cornered.

The otherwise tough officers had to show their soft side as they convinced the man, suspected to have killed his ex-girlfriend by tying her to the bed and setting the house on fire, to surrender and live to face justice.

The man who has been on the run since Friday, January  22, has been traced by the DCI at an apartment building in Nairobi's Kayole area.

According to the detectives, the man had locked himself in the house and was threatening to jump.

"Detectives have cornered the man believed to have murdered his ex-girlfriend in Njiru by tying her up inside her house and setting it on fire.

The suspect, who has been on the run since the Friday incident has locked himself up in a house on the fifth floor of an apartment in Kayole," the DCI wrote.

"He is currently at a balcony, threatening to commit suicide. Our officers are at the scene pleading with him not to take his life on account of his actions since all is not lost," the sleuths added.

The deceased, Margaret Muchemi, is reported to have invited the suspect to her house to iron out the issues that had strained their relationship.

The deceased's house househelp in a report filed with the police had stated that the suspect came to Muchemi's house and requested that they be given space to sort out their issues.

"Later on, in the afternoon, the house was seen in flames and even after efforts to put out the fire nothing was salvaged not even the deceased," a report by the DCI stated.

Preliminary reports by the police had established that the deceased had been tied to the bed before the house was torched.
