Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has responded to DCI George Kinoti's summon with regards to reports that Interior PS Karanja Kibicho and himself promoted violence during the 2017 elections campaigns.

In a statement on Wednesday, January 27, the flamboyant politician laughed off the directive stating that he had anticipated the summon.

"I find it laughable that police consider speaking the truth as an offence of undermining the authority of a public officer. How ridiculous.

"It is also absurd that they consider what I said as amounting to incitement to violence," he stated.

Sonko maintained that his claims were true, adding that it was not an offence for public officers to be held accountable by the people they serve.

"Kenya is not a police state as we live in a democratic country, and nobody in Kenya is above the law, regardless of the office they hold," he explained.

Sonko, however, added that he would honour the summons as a law-abiding citizen, stating that he was ready to spill the beans on the so-called 'system and deep state'.

"Enzi za kutishatisha watu zilipita kitambo, na kila mfanyi kazi wa Serikali ana jukumu la kuwajibika. (The days when one would threaten people because of their rank are over as ever public officer has to be accountable)" he maintained.

The former governor added that he was ready to defend his claims in court.

Sonko had on Sunday, January 24, alleged that he along with Kibicho, and other state officials, stage-managed some of the chaos experienced in the country during the 2017 general election.

He confessed to being involved in the planning of the chaos with the aim of portraying the ODM Party in bad light.

In response, Kibicho recorded a statement with the DCI and threatened to sue Sonko for damaging his reputation.

Kibicho stated that he would be pressing charges against Sonko over the allegations. He also promised to sue Sonko for past indiscretions directed at him, but which had gone unpunished.
