A boda boda rider has killed himself after losing a motorbike due to an unpaid debt. The 27-year-old is said to have been using his uncles' motorbike but failed to submit the daily remittance as they had agreed.

The rider identified as Evance Odhiambo hanged himself in his house at Rasira beach in Gwassi South Location, Suba South constituency in Migori.

According to The Standard, it is reported that Odhiambo hanged himself because his paternal uncle took away the motorbike that he had been using as a source of income.

“The deceased was tricked by his uncle who had asked to be taken to his Kaksingri home using the motorbike but he declined to release the bike once they reached his home,” said the Rasira Beach Management Unit chairman Sospeter Ayako.

After the bike was taken away, Odhiambo became angry arguing that his uncle had not given him more time to pay the debt.

Odhiambo's wife said that he had complained bitterly over the decision by his uncle to repossess the bike and suspect that could have led to his action.

However, the deceased did not leave a note indicating the reason for his decision.

The area Chief, Elisha Njuma, urged residents to consider dialogue as the best solution for disagreements instead of resorting to suicide.

Boda boda has been one of the main sources of income for the youth because of its convenience and affordability for users.
