Police officers intervened and guided Citizen TV Maria series cast through Mombasa city after thousands of fans rushed to meet the celebrities.

Award-winning actress Yasmeen Said (Maria), Brian Ogana (Luwi), Bridget Shigadi (Sophia) and their colleagues embarked on a series of tours across Mombasa and Kilifi Counties on Friday, January 29.

Their fans struggled to greet them as the bus snaked into the city. Residents chased the bus and attempted to grab the actors who spread their arms through the windows, to the cheering crowd.

Several businesses shut down, with entrepreneurs joining the mass into welcoming the stars in Mombasa.

"I just realised that we are adored and loved by thousands of fans in Mombasa. I even lost my voice shouting back at them and telling them how much we appreciate," Yasmeen said.

"They have made us who we are and we can't them enough. This proves that local content is taking over the audiovisual industry and other channels have to promote Kenyan artists," Victor (Ronald Ndubi) added.

Maria (Yasmeen Said) and the show Maria series won several awards at the 2019 Kalasha Awards. Maria won the best actress of the year and the show was recognised as the best TV drama.

Mombasa Governor, Hassan Joho, met the team at a private event, later on in the day, where they displayed the awards and posed for photos with him.

"We (Mombasa County) were honoured to host the famous Maria Show cast and crew during their coastal tour. Their success in the production of quality and exciting local content is a testament to their zeal and focus in search of success.

"Creative art is a key lucrative sector with a huge potential for the younger generation to tap into, and as such it’s paramount for us to facilitate various platforms to enable them to thrive globally," Joho said.

He added that his government prioritized empowering the youth from across all sectors to allow them to participate productively in growing the economy.
