Several schools in Murang'a have been closed indefinitely following rising cases of student unrest in the county.

Speaking on Friday, February 5, Murang'a County Commissioner Mohammed Bare stated that the security agencies were looking into separate incidences of unruly students in various schools.

Among the schools that have been shut down are St Paul's Gathukiini, Igikiro boys and Gakarati Secondary School in the county.

Bare stated that the students would be called back to school after the underlying issues are addressed.

"Some of the students are going on a rampage after being denied the opportunity to watch football as they were used to while at home," he observed.

The county commissioner further sent a warning to students stating that it was a criminal offence to burn any part of the school and that they would be held liable for their actions.

"We have gathered enough evidence to take a student to court," he added.

Bare disclosed that the police were pursuing a student who had run away from a school in Kangema after being found in possession of 13 rolls of bhang.

The schools' closure came after the Education Ministry on Thursday, February 4, outlined tough measures to curb the unrest in schools that has seen almost 30 institutions set ablaze in six months.

In a circular signed by Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, the ministry directed school heads to reside in institutions so that they can supervise student activity, especially around the dormitory areas.

Education CS George Magoha had earlier warned parents that they would face the consequences for the unruly behaviour witnessed in some of the schools.

The CS stated that parents whose children will be caught destroying school property would be forced to foot the repair costs.
