The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has warned students against involvement in arson following such incidences in the recent past where students have been suspected of burning school property.

DCI warned learners in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions of the risks they expose themselves to by getting involved in such activities. It added that it is archiving and consolidating charges for any student involved in crime which would reflect in their Certificate of Good Conduct.

This trend comes just six weeks before this year's KCSE examinations threatening to disrupt learning in some schools.

Five secondary schools have witnessed arson cases between Sunday night, January 24 and Monday morning, January 25.

The most recent arson incident was on Monday morning, at St Luke's Boy's High School, where the students protested again corporal punishment by a prefect. The police intervened and arrested several students and the school has been closed indefinitely.

On Sunday evening, Kituro High School and Timboroa Boys High School lost a section of their dormitories to a fire that started at around 9 pm when the students were in class for evening preps.

In Bomet County, ten students of Kimulot Boys High School were arrested on Monday morning following a fire incident in their dormitory.

Baringo County Commissioner, Henry Wafula, confirmed the police are investigating the fire incidences.

The Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha had challenged teachers and parents to be tough on students and be vigilant to prepare them to go through life as well as urging teachers to feel free to discipline the children.

Magoha wants chaplains to be posted in schools to curb the rising cases of indiscipline in schools.

The former UoN Vice Chancellor and representatives from various religious institutions will unveil a document in mid-February 2021, which will dictate the conduct of the religious officials.
