A form three student from Nyang’ori Boys High School, Vihiga County was arrested for killing a school guard on Sunday, January 17.

Police reports indicate that the student had tried to attack other students with the metal rod when the victim identified as Willy Mukonambi intervened.

The student diverted the attention to the guard and hit him repeatedly with the rod. The teachers and school nurse rescued Mukonambi from the onslaught and took him to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital.

The victim however succumbed due to severe injuries sustained during the attack.

The office of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in a statement, confirmed that the student would be charged with murder.

The unfortunate news is the latest in the recent spate of violence that has been rampant among the youth.

Previous acts of violence have seen students target teachers, a situation that could spread to staffers if the incident in Vihiga is anything to go by.

The Teacher's Service Commission (TSC) has asked members of the public to be more involved in mentoring students in order to create a peaceful society.

"TSC regrets the recent attacks on our teachers by learners in Kisii, and the attempted attack by another student in Mokwerero Sec School in Nyamira County.

"Let’s all Kenyans of goodwill help mentor our children positively," read the statement from the commission.

A recent case saw a university student confess to killing four of his family members including his mother, father, their adopted nephew, his brother and a construction worker on the night of January 5 in Karura Village, Kiambu County.

The student, after being interrogated by the police admitted that he was influenced by a villainous character in a British drama TV series dubbed Killing Eve.

Days later, another form three student in Kisii County allegedly stabbed two teachers after being summoned to the staff room and reprimanded for reporting to class late.

The two teachers were rushed to Ram hospital in Kisii town after they sustained injuries. The 17-year-old student was later on arraigned in court and released on Ksh50,000 cash bail or Ksh100,000 bond.

Recently, a student at Mokwerero Secondary school, Nyamira County, was also nabbed after trying to hack his Deputy Principal to death with a machete.

Fortunately, the teachers of the school seized the boy in time before he could commit the heinous crime. The student was arrested by the police.
