The county government of Mombasa is set to employ over 4,000 youth in a program aimed at restoring the face of the coastal city as the tourism capital of Kenya.

The youths are expected to collect garbage and help the county curb illegal dumbing that has tarnished the aesthetics of the city.

The job initiative has already been rolled out in Mvita with over 4,000 youths expected to start the registration process.

The county also announced that there will be two teams, working during the day and night, to ensure there is sufficient manpower to manage Mombasa’s environment.

The head of the Compliance and Enforcement Unit in Mombasa, Richard Mananga, said residents and the business community have complained over the mounting garbage menace in the county.

The only requirement for the job is a copy of the national ID and three passport photo sizes. During the registration, the youth will be assigned to different regions.

Salaries for work done will be based on the original receipts presented by the youth after delivering the garbage. The county official stated that in the past some of the employees have made compensation claims for work not done.

In January 2021, the Mombasa County Government implemented measures aimed at curbing and eradicating dumbing.

Individuals found violating the illegal garbage dumbing directives will be charged a Ksh 500,000 fine. The measures seem to have worked as most residents fear paying the fine saying it is too expensive for them to risk being caught.

The successful applicants will be issued with uniform and expected to work within their wards and in line with a schedule released by supervisors. The county will have no restriction on how many households the youth get garbage because they will be paid on the amount of garbage they collect.
