The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on Wednesday morning, February 17 posted an alert to notify motorists using the Nairobi Southern Bypass Mombasa Road Bound that a trailer had overturned at the Ole Sereni Interchange causing a massive traffic snarl-up.
Traffic police at the scene stated that they were awaiting a crane to lift the heavy trailer from the road to relieve traffic.
KeNHA also urged motorists to exercise patience as the situation was being resolved.
The truck flipped on its side at the Airtel overpass causing drivers to overlap on the sides of the road which made the situation worse.
Motorists using the nearby roads have also been highly affected and have resorted to alternative routes. The crisis spread to as far as Enterprise Road having come at prime time when most people were traveling to work.
Thika Road, however, was reported to be surprisingly smooth as it usually has heavy traffic during peak hours. Traffic police manned the Thika Superhighway road at the exit into Thika Town and at Pangani while moving towards town.
On Friday morning, February 12, another large truck overturned along Wangari Maathai Road, off Thika Super Highway, affecting motorists moving in and out of Nairobi CBD.
Nairobi traffic boss, Joshua Omukata, said the truck overturned in the early hours of the day traversing across several lanes and completely blocked the highway.
The snarl-up affected motorists from Roysambu heading to town through Ngara with most of them accusing the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Kenya Traffic Police of neglect.
