Members of County Assembly in Taita-Taveta County summoned the Health Executive and the Public Service Board over the dismissal of 400 workers

The Health Executive officer John Mwakima and the board’s chair Alfred Mlolwa were put on the spot for  firing the health workers after they went on strike.

According to the Deputy Chairperson of Health Constance Mwandawiro, the county's decision has created a health service crisis in addition to rendering the health workers jobless.

“The two officials will appear before the House tomorrow. The strike must end because our people are in danger,” Mwandawiro said.

She also added that the absence of health workers is only delaying the country's effort to ensure that it provides cheaper health services to residents.

Voi, Mwatate, Wundanyi, and Taveta hospitals are currently offering outpatient services only with most patients being referred to private hospitals.

The health crisis in Taita Taveta is worsening as patients remain hopeful that the county government will provide a solution soon.

A woman reportedly died last week because she could not get an ambulance to take her to the hospital.

The woman identified as Sidi Said, allegedly died while being rushed to St Joseph Shelter of Hope after a county hospital failed to offer her treatment.

Another woman also died after allegedly failing to raise enough money to cater for surgery at a private hospital.

Taita Taveta county on Wednesday, February 17, removed all the health workers from county houses saying that they were no longer county employees.

Although the fate of the over 400 fired medic remain unknown, services are expected to resume after the county hired other health workers.
