London Fashion Week featured a film, Looku, which celebrated the work of 11 emerging Kenyan brands and designers on Saturday, 20 and Sunday, 21 February 2021 in an effort to bring together cross-cultural collaborations between creatives in London and Nairobi.
Kenyan designers as Favoloso By Nanu, Genteel, Nisisi Factory, Sevaria, Enda, and We Are NBO, showcased their work on the premier of the global virtual show.
This was a comeback moment for fashion designers in Kenya since 2011 when John Kaveke made his debut at the fashion event.Model Adhel Bol showcases Sevaria's designs presented in Wauzine Publication.
The British Council’s Creative DNA programme and emerging creative consultancy Talent Scout came together to create Looku the film. The show was co-directed by Sunny Dolat and Noel Kasyoka, who sought to recreate the creative vibrancy of Nairobi’s street style scene.
The screening of Looku was accompanied by three-panel talks on timely topics like fostering creativity during a crisis, reimagining fashion’s capital cities, and the value of more conscious design practices.
“Whenever we see images of Kenya and Nairobi, often, it’s the landscapes and wildlife that are often prioritized, over the incredible and dynamic people who live there,” said Sunny Dolat, co-founder of The Nest Collective and leader of the creative direction of Creative DNA x Fashion Scout digital publication Wauzine.Models Ronald and Shekinah display Sam Omindo's brand in Kibera, Nairobi County.
“Looku and Wauzine are a celebration of Nairobi, Nairobisms, and Nairobians in their glory and flair, a love letter from us to us,” Sunny added.
The London Fashion Week ran from Friday, 19 to Tuesday, February 23 also featuring other international creatives. The clothing show only takes place twice a year in February and September.
The live stream, which began in 2020, gives over 80 designers a global audience and is one of the biggest fashion events. By hosting exclusive multimedia content from designers and brand partners, London Fashion Week facilitates collaborations and brings together fashion, culture, and technology.
According to GQ magazine, the digital showcase focused entirely on a gender-neutral theme and saw a number of landmark moments on the platform such as podcasts, webinars, designer showrooms, and collection presentations.
