Miraa drivers will have to adjust their speeds after an association, in conjunction with government agencies, hatched a plan to enhance speed limits.
Speaking during a tour of the Embu region, Agriculture CAS Ann Nyagah noted that speeding by Miraa drivers was responsible for high number of accidents, some of which leave people incapacitated.
In the new requirement, the drivers will be provided with safety stickers and will be required to maintain a speed of less than 100kph.
Mbeere-Embu Miraa Association leader confirmed that the implementation of the new directive will be carried out by government agencies in conjunction with its members.
"Every driver in this county, whether from Ukambani or Meru, should maintain their speed between 80kph and 100kph while travelling from the region to the Superhighway (Thika).
"You will be arrested if you surpass the agreed speed limit as agreed. Every car will possess a union sticker. You will be deal with the police if your car lacks the sticker," stated the Association's chair Jervasius Nyamakiothe.
Nyaga further noted that the state had set aside Ksh53 million to construct Miraa shades in the region.
"We have kept aside Ksh53 million for the union which shall come in two-weeks time. We shall hold a meeting with you because it is your money but we shall put measures in place for proper usage.
"The President deemed it useful to take care of Miraa farmers," stated Nyagah.
In July 2020, two police officers found themselves nursing injuries after being clobbered for rescuing a Miraa driver.
The melee ensued after a speeding Miraa vehicle, a Toyota Probox model hit a pedestrian killing him on the spot.
Following the accident, a mob comprised mainly of boda boda riders, attacked the driver baying for his blood as police officers swung into action to save the man.
However, the irate mob could hear none of it as they also descended on the two police officers who tried to take the miraa driver away from the scene.
