A First-Year student at Maasai Mara University drowned on Saturday, February 27, while swimming with friends at Enkare-Narok River in Narok County.

His body was retrieved from the River that same day and taken to the Narok County Referral Hospital mortuary.

The dean also confirmed that Fortune was accompanied by classmates on an adventure along the river who watched him dive into the river but took more than they expected to come out.

They spent a few minutes deliberating on what to do before resorting to asking for help from the school.

“Colleagues claimed that the student decided to swim, but unfortunately, he did not manage to emerge minutes after diving, prompting his peers to raise the alarm in the 1.30 pm mishap,” Aden said.

Aden said he was told about the incident 10 minutes later, at which point he led other staff members of the university including the university diver Chris Kemboi to the scene.

The search along the river extended for over 2 hours before the deceased body was retrieved at around 4 pm.

Maasai Mara University Police officers and the officers from the Narok Police Station helped in the search.

The university’s management further stated that the student drowned at the spot where two other learners were reported to have drowned in 2014.

The dean addressed the students concerning the incident and asked them to be cautious and avoid dangerous sections of the river.
