The government through Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) issued notices to residents of an expansive Nairobi estate warning them of impending demolition.

The authority, in a notice dated Friday, February 26, warned the owners of 20 plots located in Nairobi's Umoja area to vacate the road reserve in the next 40 days.

The residential buildings are located along the Mutindwa-Kifaru Road and have encroached the reserve by up to 9 meters.

"Your enumerated plots above are located at the center of Mutindwa-Kifaru road which is part of project roads.

"The Road reserve for this section is 18m as per the approved  and authenticated survey plans while the available corridor on the ground is only 9m wide. Your properties are encroaching on 9m of the road reserve," read the statement in part

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a representative from KURA confirmed that the project was already ongoing elsewhere and it is just a matter of time before the law catches up with the perpetrators.

"Once the authority issues that notice, the work is always ongoing and the demolitions can happen any time," stated the representative.

The authority further indicated that the owners of the premises must have vacated by the 30th day since the notice was issued which falls on March 29, 2021.

"Works on the aforesaid project have begun, and the contractor is now clearing the site and has at other sectors commenced the earthworks in readiness for the main carriage way, side drains and walk ways construction.

"In view of the above, and to avoid any delay and inconvenience to the ongoing project, you are required to have surrendered the encroached portions of the road reserve of Mutindwa-Kifaru Road as at the close of business on the thirtieth day from the date of this notice," continued the notice.

The project is part of a Ksh902 million road project that is set to benefit the residents of estates in Umoja area, Nairobi County.

The project scope involves upgrading into bitumen standards, a 7 meter wide two-lane carriageway, inclusion of a 2 meter footpaths, bus bays, drainage facilities, road marking and street lighting.

The project consists of several roads namely Ruaraka Crescent Road, Kangundo Moi Drive link, Malewa - Mwangaza Road, Nasra Estate Road, Kifaru Mutindwa Road, Kangundo Service Road, Mowlem Link Road and Outer Ring Road links.

According to the Authority, the road project is expected to be complete by November 2022.
