Former Garissa Finance CEC Idriss Mukhtar might have to live with a bullet lodged in his brain after Turkish-based doctors say surgery is too risky.

The doctors who had given the family a go-ahead to fly him to Turkey for treatment have now said that the removal of the bullet in his brain may lead to further health complications.

His father, Aden Mukhtar, revealed that the doctors said it was hard to remove the bullet since it was fired from close-range which went through the right half of his brain.

“I had lots of hope that, at last, we had found the solution to what has been a challenge to us as a family. However, the sad news is that it seems it will be hard to remove the bullet from his brain,” he said.

In May 2018, the former County official was shot in the head in Kileleshwa, Nairobi County.

In July 2019, the family flew him to India where the doctors also ruled out removing the bullet from his head making the family seek a second opinion.

Mukhtar was flown to Turkey in March 2020 where he stayed until December. He jetted back into the country and was taken to his parent’s home in Garissa County.

His father explained that they decided to take him back home in Garissa due to expenses of taking care of him in Nairobi.

The father also said that Mukhtar can now make small gestures unlike when he was unconscious.

“Unlike in the beginning when was fully unconscious, now he can move and I hope that he will get better,” he said.

Aden insisted that he is still interested in getting justice for his son, calling upon the Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss, George Kinoti, to expedite up the matter.

David Mwai, the main suspect in the case died days after he was arrested. The other two suspects Juliet Njoki and Mohamud Hussein Aden are facing trial over the attempt on Mukhtar’s life.
