Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa, has claimed that his arrest on Friday, March 5, was instigated by his political enemies.

Speaking to Nation, Echesa stated that throwing him into the cell will not stop him from a path he has chosen.

“Throwing me in the cell will not cow me from my conviction that (Dr) Ruto is better placed to become the President of our country in 2022,” he said.

The former sports CS further noted that being behind bars is not a big deal since he is familiar with the place.

“There are people out there who think that throwing others in the cells is the end of the world. I was born and brought up in the ghettos and being here (cell) is nothing big. I am in a familiar territory, “said Echesa.

According to Echesa, he did not slap the IEBC official during the by election as the viral video showed, arguing that the clip was edited to project him as a violent person in a scheme to intimidate him.

“Our agents had been thrown out and I wanted to know who had issued instructions to that effect,” he said, “I didn’t not slap anybody.”

He further insisted that many politicians had done wrong things during the by-elections, but wondered why he was the only one arrested despite there being ‘no evidence’ against him.

Echesa surrendered to the police on March 5, moments after the Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, issued an ultimatum for him arrest as an armed and dangerous criminal.

The former CS narrated how he was transported to Nairobi after his arrest terming it as misuse of public resources.

“What was the reason for being ferried by a convoy that included a contingent of nearly 60 police officers drawn from the General Service Unit (GSU), when I freely presented myself to the police? This is a waste of resources,” he said.

The embattled CS is being held at Gigiri Police Station and might be arraigned in Court on Monday.
