More than 50 students from Keriri Girls were on Thursday, March 11, were rushed to hospital after they sustained injuries from a stampede that happened at around 4am.
The stampede is said to have been caused by an M4.7 earthquake that happened near the Kenya/Tanzania boarder.
"We received a distressed call that some girls got injured due to the earthquake that took place around that time. So we were alerted to prepare the ground for those students to come and get medical assistance," an official from Ram Hospital, where the girls were taken for treatment stated.
Out of the 50, Abobo stated that nine had been retained for further observation including some who are expectant.
A similar incident was witnessed at Riyabe Secondary School where six students were hospitalised after sustaining injuries.
One of the students is said to have broken his leg during the stampede.
The students at Riyabe were in class for the morning preps when the earthquake occurred, causing them to flee.
Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba stated that the injured students were rushed to Keroka Sub-County Hospital.
“One of the students, who is 17 years old and is in Form Two, broke his legs after jumping through the window. He has since been transferred to St. Clare’s Kaplong Mission Hospital for advanced treatment” he stated.
According to a report by Volcano Discovery, a shallow magnitude earthquake was reported near Musoma, Musoma Municipal, North Mara, Tanzania on Thursday morning.
The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report," reads an excerpt of the report.
