Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has been forced to innovate its delivery strategy after President Uhuru Kenyatta made a new order on ongoing multi-billion projects.

A report by The Standard on Tuesday, March 23, indicated that the Head of State revised the projects' completion deadline from June 2023 to June 2022.

During a tour of the projects located in Mt Kenya Region, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia noted that Uhuru was looking to launch the projects before his retirement in 2022.

“The reason why we have routinely inspected the construction is to ensure that the projects are fast tracked to the new time frame.

"The president is also closely monitoring and looking forward to their completion,” stated the Transport Cabinet Secretary.

Among the projects whose timelines have been reviewed include 84km Kenol-Makutano (Mwea)-Sagana-Marua highway valued at Ksh30 billion and the extension of Thika Superhighway to Kenol Township.

KeNHA chairman Wangai Ndirangu also noted that projects in other areas of the country that were scheduled to be completed in 2023 had been revised upwards.

They include 540km Mau Mau cluster roads in Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua and Nakuru counties.

To keep up with the strict demands, KeNHA has contracted various companies which are already carrying out the job simultaneously.

“Although we have revised the time frame, I can assure Kenyans that we shall not compromise the standards,” Wangai assured.

The KeNHA boss further explained that it was deemed important to complete the project under the leadership of the person who initiated them.

He confirmed that the President was looking to have the Lapsset corridor project completed in record time.

The project consists of a highway connecting Kenya to South Sudan through Lokichar in Turkana.
