Two people are reported to have died after a drunk driver raced against an ambulance that was rushing a patient to the hospital.

According to witnesses, the driver killed a lady on the spot while the other victim died on the night of Monday 22 while receiving treatment at Makueni Referral Hospital.

“There was an ambulance that was headed in the same direction with the car and the driver of the car tried to overtake in this narrow road that has no bumps. The ambulance slowed down to allow them to pass and it was during this time when the car deviated from the road, smashed a wall, and plunged into a building compound,” Charity Kiamba who witnessed the accident said.

Other witnesses who were on the balcony of Mundu Apartments confirmed the occurrence of the events that happened on Monday, March 22 evening and said that it was horrible seeing how the driver disrespected pedestrians.

After hitting the patient who died instantly, the driver is said to have gotten out of his car staggering, made the Roman Catholic sign and left the scene of the accident on foot as people started to gather around.

“I saw him do the sign of the cross maybe because he survived the accident, and then walked away,” Kiamba added.

Eliap Kiruthi, a resident at Mundu Apartments, told the press that he rushed to the scene after hearing a loud thud from his house only to find a woman lying down and three unconscious people in the ambulance.

“I was in the house when I heard a loud noise from the car brakes before the car crashing past the apartment’s wall. When I walked outside I found three people inside the car and another injured lady lying outside,” said Kiruthi.

The Makueni referral hospital medical superintendent Dr. Joseph Masila told The Standard that they had received three victims following the accident.

Police in Wote town, Makueni County have since launched a manhunt for the intoxicated driver who is also reported to have crashed into a residential building.

The vehicle was towed and taken to Makueni  Police Station with police officers saying that it had several bottles of alcohol.

The driver's whereabouts remain unknown with the police officers asking for anyone with the information to report to the nearby police stations.
