Police officers in Bungoma are looking for a landlady reported to be the widow of late Kabuchai politician Tale Nabangi after she allegedly locked up her tenant's children over rent arrears.

A report by Daily Nation on Sunday, March 28, indicated that Catherine Malaba, the widow of the late Kabuchai politician Tale Nabangi, welded both the front door and the back while the two minors were inside the house.

The children were aged 10 and 3 years. Police said that the mother was away at work when the incident happened.

Bungoma South OCS Moses Munywoki confirmed the incident noting that the landlady had expressed an inhuman act by locking helpless children up over rent.

The tenant, identified as Violet Wanjala, said that she did not expect her landlady to lock the door since her business had been affected by the tough economic situation in the country.

Munywoki led other officers in breaking down the doors to free the children who had spent over five hours inside the building.

The OCS further noted that the search for the landlady who is missing is ongoing.

Malaba's husband Nabangi passed away in July 2020 in what Bungoma Health CEC Antony Walela suspected to be a Covid-19 related infection.

The politician, who had vied for the Kabuchai Parliamentary Seat, passed away after spending a week in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The politician ran for the seat as an independent ticket but was defeated by Ford Kenya's James Lusweti who also passed away in December 2020.

Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced another round of lockdown targeting 5 counties - which were declared diseases zone.

The economy is expected to further deteriorate following the announcement, with many expected to lose their jobs and businesses.
