An officer attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) lost his life on the evening of Sunday, October 12, after an altercation at a hotel in Nairobi.

The incident, which took place at a resort off Mombasa Road in Embakasi, saw the officer engage in a confrontation with a civilian, which escalated to a physical altercation.

According to a police report, the officer, who was assigned to guard the JKIA perimeter fence, had visited the hotel to charge his mobile phone.

A supervisor at the resort further reports that he witnessed an unidentified man strangling the officer within the hotel premises.

In the wake of the altercation, officers from the Embakasi Police Station responded swiftly, only to find the officer's lifeless body submerged in a nearby water-filled trench.

The deceased had visible injuries to his neck and face, suggesting that he possibly passed away from strangulation, as accounted for by one witness.

While the reason for the physical altercation remains unknown, witnesses say the officer was overpowered by the unnamed individual during the fight.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the assailant, whose identity remains under investigation.

Meanwhile, the body of the slain officer has been taken to the City Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.

Authorities are calling for anyone with more information related to the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.

This is the latest case of an officer losing his life under unclear circumstances, amid a rising trend of shootings and altercations at entertainment venues.

Earlier this year, a police officer fatally shot his colleague while they were leaving an entertainment joint in Nairobi. The deceased officer, who is attached to the General Service Unit, was in the company of his brother when an argument with his colleague ensued.

The argument morphed into a physical confrontation, with the constable withdrawing his firearm and shooting his colleague dead.

In a panic, the shooter attempted to run away during the 1am incident but was quelled by members of the public who were baying for his blood.
