A Kenyan has filed a petition seeking signatures following the demolition of a footbridge along Waiyaki Way that has left residents suffering.
In the petition dated Sunday, March 28, the man identified as Charles Chege argues that the footbridge, which was located at Uthiru, was demolished to pave way for the expansion of the highway - but a new one was yet to be erected.
He argues that the road has been opened for use by motorists but there are no plans to have the footbridge erected.
"Sometimes in 2020, as you were constructing the above road, you demolished the bridge which was used by pedestrians to close over from one side of the highway entering and exiting Uthiru Cooperation.
"However, since this bridge was demolished and the expanded road opened to use by motorists, pedestrians were left with no alternative means of crossing over the highway," he stated.
In the statement which has been shared by Daniel 'Churchill' Ndambuki, Chege argued that accidents had increased on the highway since the footbridge serviced thousands of residents who live in the region.
"Sadly, there have been many accidents leaving scores of pedestrians dead others seriously injured as they cross over the highway amidst speeding vehicles.
"We note that you have positioned a traffic marshal but this has not rescued the situation, since the vehicles are normally on high speed and the marshal is not stationed there throughout day and night," he continued.
The petition was signed by over 3,500 people of the requisite 5,000 signatures.
The expansion of the highway is part of Ksh 160 billion transformations of the road connecting Nairobi and Nakuru town.
The project is aimed at decongesting traffic along the highway that is often used by both cars and trailers.
