14 Die as Covid-19 Positivity Rate Shoots up

984 individuals have tested positive for Covid-19, out of a sample size of 5,319 tested in the last 24 hours with a positivity rate of 18.5% up from 15.3% reported on Wednesday.

Health CAS Dr Rashid Aman on Thursday, April 1, announced that 14 deaths had been reported in the past 24 hours bringing the cumulative deaths to 2,167.

The total number of confirmed positive Covid-19 cases now stands at 135,042.

From the cases, 928 are Kenyans, 56 are foreigners while 521 are male and 463 are female. The youngest is a 6- year-old infant while the oldest has 97 years.

He reported that there had been 388 recoveries, 314 from home-based while 74 hospitals bringing the total number of recoveries to 93,067.

1,557 patients are currently admitted in various facilities country wide. 4,879 are on home-based isolation and care. 

161 are in ICU, 48 are on ventilatory support while 104 on supplemental oxygen, nine patients are on observation.

Nairobi continues to lead with 483 cases, Kiambu 73, Machakos 61, Uasin Gishu 46, Nyeri 36,  Nakuru 35, Kericho 32, Kitui 28, Mombasa 23, Kisumu 21, while Meru and Kajiado each recorded 20 cases each.

Makueni 16, Nandi 12, Kilifi 10, Samburu 9, Siaya 9, Migori 9, Bomet 6, Kakamega 6, Homa Bay 6, Baringo 4, Bungoma 4, Busia 3, Marsabit 3, Murang'a 3, Nyandarua 3,  Elgeyo Marakwet 2, while Mandera, Kirinyaga and Vihiga all had one case each.

The Health CS warned against lowering guard against as the vaccine is being rolled out in the country.

"Let us not imagine that the vaccine is a panacea to the pandemic, it is not.It is just one piece of weaponry that is used in the war. We should not lower our guard,"

He added that with the Covid vaccine monitoring app, 40 minor events had been reported. Dr Aman stated the minor cases had been expected. 

"The events recorded are not significant to warrant any investigations," he assured.

He added that medical officers had accounted for the largest number of people who have received the vaccine at 74,698.

"The government expects to receive another 2.5 million doses of vaccines next month. This consignment will go a long way in boosting our vaccination exercise in the second phase of this program, which will see more Kenyans receive the jab," he added.
